Exchange Student

The PAX Student Exchange program is currently seeking host…

The PAX Student Exchange program is currently seeking host families in San Diego and the surrounding areas (La Mesa, El Cajon, Santee, Poway, and National City)!

PAX students are 15-18 years old, proficient in English, have their own health insurance, and are eager to experience what life is like in the US! Host families provide PAX students with a bed, meals, a quiet place to study, and a supportive environment where they can engage in everyday American life. In turn, PAX students share their country and culture in addition to providing a fresh perspective. All types of families are welcome to host, whether single parents, retirees, or families with children of their own.

Families can choose a student based on a number of factors, including hobbies they may have in common with host family members. Host families are not obligated to take students on trips or entertain them. Potential host families must complete an online application and background check.

The local coordinator is the student’s advocate during the home stay, provides support to the host family, organizes occasional gatherings for students, and communicates monthly with the student and host family.

PAX also allows for “Welcome Families” for anyone who isn’t sure they want to host for the whole school year. Welcome families greet students at the airport, help them get acquainted with their new school and community, and get to enjoy the fun of sharing so many “firsts” with the exchange student they welcome into their home. The PAX community coordinator then works to identify another family in the same school community–perhaps among the exchange student’s new school friends–who are able to host the student for the remainder of the school year. Welcome families typically host for 6-8 weeks.

PAX also offers a referral incentive to any non-profit organization of $150 per family referral that hosts a student.
