We had a year to experiment with online learning. What did we learn?

Before schools nationwide moved millions of students from classroom seats to screens, educators at Highline Public Schools in South King County wanted to expand online learning. Back then, Highline saw an opportunity: Online education might be good for students who want more flexibility and independence than a traditional classroom setting.  Now, more than a year after districts nationwide Frankensteined their way through remote instruction, Highline sees even more reason to make good on its initial plan. The district’s first full-time virtual school, Highline Virtual Academy, is scheduled to open this fall as an all-remote option for middle and high schoolers who want to spend traditional school hours working or helping…

Online learning at home isn’t going away next school year

Monica Spydell never would have thought to enroll her second-grade daughter in online classes before the pandemic. But after schools closed and forced her family and others into distance learning, Spydell was surprised to see Sierra, who attends Torrey Pines Elementary in La Jolla, thriving in online learning. A talkative girl, Sierra was speaking up frequently in Zoom classes and still had a love for learning, even though it was online, her mother said. Now Spydell plans to keep Sierra in online learning next year, even though San Diego Unified intends to offer full-time, in-person learning at all its schools next fall. Spydell says she worries about Sierra’s health if…

St. Isidore Online Curriculum expands, will be offered again for 2021-2022 school year

The Archdiocese of Denver’s online Catholic curriculum, St. Isidore, has been a true blessing to many families with children in grades K-8 who wanted a strong Catholic curriculum this past year but didn’t feel comfortable with their students attending school in person because of the pandemic. This included families like the Buckmeisters and Janisses.  “St. Isidore has been an incredible blessing for our family this past school year. Not only are the teachers and administrators knowledgeable and accessible but engaging and exceptional in fostering the love of the Catholic faith for our son. Moreover, the online curriculum at SICC was wonderful as it was adaptable for our son who needs to be challenged above his grade level in…

Number of kids being homeschooled spiked last year, with major increase in Black families

(WXYZ) — School shutdowns have resulted in a number of families opting for homeschooling. Michigan’s public schools lost more than 60,000 students in the fall of 2020, and enrollment is continuing to drop. The switch to homeschooling is growing more diverse, and it could benefit some communities like Detroit, where only 16{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1} of kids are reading at grade level in third grade. When the pandemic hit, the last-minute switch to virtual learning made matters worse, and many students checked out and dropped out. Since spring of 2020, the number of households choosing independent parent & child-led homeschooling has doubled, according to a U.S. Census Bureau survey – from 5.4{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1} to…
