‘I Really Loved My Job’: Why the Pandemic Has Hit These Workers Harder

There is a widespread assumption that people with disabilities don’t need to work because they can collect Supplemental Security Income, or S.S.I. But Martha Jackson, an assistant commissioner in the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, said S.S.I. pays only about $800 per month in New York — enough to survive on combined with other benefits, but hardly a ticket to comfort. For some who still live with their parents and worked only part time, holding a job was a step toward independence. While the city is gradually clawing its way back from the lockdown, many people with disabilities face the prospect of retraining or switching fields in order to…

Hospitality workers on edge, wondering if jobs will come back

For much of the last year, Claudia Sandoval worried she might lose her house. In the early days of the pandemic, when travel and group events came to a grinding halt in March, she lost her job as a banquet cook at Delta Hotel by Marriott in northeast Minneapolis. Her bills began piling up. She was able to pay her mortgage with her unemployment benefits. She prioritized other bills, signing up for payment plans so her utilities wouldn’t be cut off. She visited food shelves to help feed her two children. And her $3,800 property tax bill that she was already behind on? That had to wait. “It’s been stressful,”…

WSJ: Best Buy has cut store jobs, reduced hours of other workers

Best Buy told store employees this week that it is cutting jobs and reducing their hours. The Richfield-based electronics retailer declined to give details of job changes, but it has said that its workforce needs to evolve. “We don’t generally comment on specific personnel matters,” the company said in a statement to the Star Tribune. “However, as we have said before, customer shopping behavior will be permanently changed in a way that is even more digital and puts customers entirely in control to shop how they want.” The retailer’s workforce, it said, will need to change to meet those needs and provide “more flexible opportunities for our people.” Best Buy’s…

‘I Did Something Useful’: Unemployed Workers Take On the Virus in Temp Jobs

Those suggestions are now taped to the wall of his cubicle, where he works alongside fellow testers who used to work in many fields, including airline pilots and cabin crews. Before March, Mr. Lawrence’s days were filled with music, working with orchestras, symphony choruses and national choirs across the country. He took the job swabbing throats to fill time, earn some money and connect with others. “I’ve enjoyed it much more than I expected to,” said Mr. Lawrence, 55. The virus continues to spread through Britain, accelerated by an especially contagious variant, and the country recently surpassed the grim milestone of 100,000 Covid deaths. Helping in some way to slow…

Did Biden Admin Tell Keystone Pipeline Workers ‘Find Another Job’?

After U.S. President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Jan. 20, 2021, to stop construction on the Keystone XL oil pipeline, Snopes became aware of the below-displayed image depicting White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki supposedly telling laid-off pipeline workers matter-of-factly, “You can find another job.” Before we address the claim, some context: The exact number of people who might be out of permanent or temporary work as a result of the executive order stopping construction on the 1,700-mile project spanning Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma remained unknown as of this writing. A crew had completed the first section of the construction project, totaling just 1.2 miles,…

Where are all of the jobs? These sectors hired the most workers in January

EmployBridge chief workforce analyst Joanie Courtney on the January jobs report amid the coronavirus pandemic. U.S. job growth resumed in January after a one-month decline, as a slew of new hires in the professional and business service sector offset losses in other parts of the nation’s pandemic-stricken economy. The Labor Department said in its monthly payroll report, released Friday, that employment rose by 49,000 last month, a lackluster start to the new year as COVID-19 and restrictions implemented to curb its spread continued to weigh on businesses. The unemployment rate edged down to 6.3{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1}. The bulk of the job growth took place in professional and business services, which rose by 97,000. Temporary help service…

Many laid-off workers are landing new jobs for more pay

Brandon Boyd was furloughed from his communications jobs for an events company in March and then permanently laid off November, making him a little nervous, especially with his jobless benefits set to expire within weeks. “It kind of put me in scramble mode,” says Boyd, who lives in Erie, Pennsylvania. “I’m 29 and filing for unemployment.” But it took Boyd just a month to draw two offers, and he accepted a position as marketing coordinator for Mercyhurst University. While it pays about $4,000 a year less than his old job, he’s offsetting that gap with free online classes at the school that will allow him to earn a Master’s degree. He’s…
