Best freelance websites 2021: Find jobs & remote work

As the shadowy cover of COVID-19 slowly lifts, America is getting back to work. For many, however, the workplace looks a little different than you remember from before, and many Americans do not have the option to just return to their pre-pandemic jobs. Enormous nationwide layoffs and business closures prompted federal stimulus support just to make it through, but as vaccinations work to help make the world safe again, it has also come time to return to work so we can rebuild and prepare for our futures. Today, there are many job websites that claim to help you find immediate employment, but the freelance gig industry is a world of…

Many people don’t want to work unless it’s from home

If you’re one of the approximately 50 percent of Americans who worked remotely during the pandemic, you’re probably wondering if remote work is in the cards after the pandemic is over. The vast majority of people say they’d like to work remotely at least part of the time, but that desire is running up against the reality of there being fewer remote jobs than there are people who say they want them. Only about 10 percent of jobs on popular hiring platforms include remote work. That’s a boon for jobs offering remote work. Take Zillow, for example, which saw a huge spike in applicants due to a new remote work…

‘I burst into tears. Then went back to my desk’: when dream jobs become nightmares | Work & careers

I was on the receiving end of more than a few tantrums during the five years I worked in advertising, but by far the most memorable was the day a senior creative executive threw a book across the room in the middle of one of his regular tirades. I was an account manager in my early 20s, working at a leading ad agency. My colleague levelled a stream of expletives at me, tossed the book and stormed out, curious heads popping out of other offices to gawp at my misfortune as he continued to rant. My crime? I’d come to deliver client feedback on a poster he’d created for an…

Austin ISD Lays Off Special Education Staff To Reorganize A ‘Toxic’ Work Environment

Lee esta historia en español. Some employees in Austin ISD’s special education department received letters this week saying their jobs were being eliminated as part of a reorganization. Elizabeth Casas, AISD’s chief academic officer, said Friday she needed to take drastic measures because a “toxic work environment” had caused a backlog of special education evaluations. She said 900 students are still awaiting them. “I heard loud and clearly from our community and our parents,” she said. “They are not happy with the services the SPED department has given over the years.” The district would not give the exact number of employees affected. There have been three executive directors in six…

Pandemic pivot: RMC Events adds jobs, fills events void with COVID work

RMC Events’ “yellow jackets” work a vaccine event at Richmond Raceway. (Photos courtesy of RMC Events) With the event industry all but shut down the past year, one would think 2020 would have spelled the end for a company with “Events” in its name. But despite the shuttered gates and largely empty seats of the venues its yellow-jacketed crews traditionally work, local staffing and event management firm RMC Events has kept busy with new work that has come about from the pandemic —trading its usual sporting events and concerts for COVID screening stations and vaccination sites. The company not only made it through 2020 relatively unscathed, with increased security staffing…

Parents share realities of juggling work while homeschooling kids

Dani Bassil, CEO, DigitasOnce my chair broke in the middle of a review. Like actually broke. I just disappeared and then reappeared after a screech. Also my dog threw up right next to me on a client presentation. Numerous times my daughter Kiki (1) has grabbed the cord on my headphones without me realizing and they just come off mid-sentence. But my favorite was when our three dogs were barking, Kiki was high-pitch wailing, the doorbell rang and I excused myself from a client call, thought I’d muted myself and loudly screamed: “Will you arseholes shut up!” (at the dogs), when I obviously hadn’t muted myself. I then found it…
