L.A. teachers union influences reopenings, online school

The Los Angeles school district is set to unfold a gradual and partial reopening plan on Tuesday, one that was heavily influenced by teachers union demands that led to a delayed start date and limited live instructional time — and also by strict safety imperatives shared by both the district and union. L.A. schools Supt. Austin Beutner has hailed the reopening as a nation-leading model for school safety that is sensitive to families in low-income communities hardest hit by illness and death during the pandemic. But the approach has also generated criticism from those who say the quantity and quality of instruction for 465,000 students have been sacrificed this year…

Grant Union High School teacher under fire for racist gestures during online class

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) – A teacher at Grant Union High School has come under fire after making racist gestures. Stunning and appalling is how Twin Rivers Unified School District is describing the gesture and comments made by a district employee. A video has circulated across social media of a Grant Union High School teacher using offensive slant eyes to depict Asians during an online class. “I am disappointed about it,” said Nathanael Retena, who has two daughters back in Guatemala and he was shocked to see this happened at a school. “That’s a teacher? Oh my goodness, if I brought my family to this country, I don’t want to put…

APS teachers union won’t support candidates taking donations from education reform group

AURORA | The small donor committee of the Aurora Education Association passed a resolution that it will not endorse or support any candidates that accept donation money from Democrats for Education Reform or similar groups. Democrats for Education Reform is a political action committee that advocates for expanding access to charter schools and stricter teacher evaluations, among other policies. It has chapters in eight states, including Colorado.  The Colorado chapter has faced increasing opposition from the Democratic Party over the past several years. At the 2018 Colorado state Democratic assembly, the party voted to amend its platform to oppose DFER’s policies and called for it to remove the word “Democrat” from…

In dispute between D.C. and union, arbiter ruling clears city schools to reopen Monday

Elizabeth Davis, president of the Washington Teachers’ Union, argued that there were numerous safety violations at schools — including HVAC systems that lacked proper documentation showing they were repaired — and that the city had failed to properly conduct walk-throughs. Based on the ruling, two schools — Coolidge High and Watkins Elementary — will probably have to delay their reopenings and schedule new walk-throughs. The arbiter said the walk-throughs at those schools were too brief and did not allow participants to view enough of the building. “The arbitrator’s decision makes it clear: all of our schools are safe and ready to reopen, and we look forward to welcoming back thousands…

Chicago Teachers Union votes to refuse in-person work, defy Chicago Public Schools’ reopening plan

Chicago Teachers Union members have voted to defy Chicago Public Schools’ reopening plans and continue working from home Monday because of health and safety concerns. City officials had said in recent days they would view the collective refusal of in-person work as a strike, but in response to Sunday’s vote results said they will delay the scheduled return of thousands of teachers and staff until Wednesday “to ensure we have the time needed to resolve our discussions without risking disruption to student learning.” The CTU’s move to reject in-person work marks the culmination of a months-long fight between the union and the nation’s third-largest school system over how and when…
