Trump burrowed at least 26 political appointees into career jobs

Trump burrowed at least 26 political appointees into career jobs during his last year in office. Their appointments to civil servant positions make it harder for Biden’s administration to fire them. At least nine more Trump appointments are awaiting review. Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories. President Donald Trump appointed 26 political appointees into career civilian positions, with at least nine more appointments awaiting review, The Washington Post reported.  Their appointments into a number of agencies, many of whom did not announce the placements, make it harder for President Joe Biden to fire them.  “The incoming Biden-Harris administration is keenly aware of last-minute efforts by the outgoing administration to…

Washington’s revolving door: can Trump staffers find lobbying jobs?

Immediately after Donald Trump entered the White House in 2017 with a promise to “drain the swamp”, he attempted to slam shut the revolving door between the US government and the lobbying industry. Mr Trump demanded that any incoming member of his administration sign a pledge that they would not engage in lobbying for at least five years after leaving public service. But on Wednesday at 1am, the outgoing president revoked Executive Order 13770, which enforced the mandate, with a stroke of a pen, in one of his final acts before departing the White House. In theory, the move should make it easier for members of his administration to find…

Warming Trends: A Catastrophe for Monarchs, ‘Science Moms’ and Greta’s Cheeky Farewell to Trump

Monarchs Near Collapse Fewer than 2,000 monarch butterflies were counted overwintering this year along the California coast—a staggering drop from the 30,000 last winter and a 99.9 percent decline from the several million butterflies that once spent the winter between San Francisco and San Diego in the 1980s, a report from the Xerces Society said this week. The plunge in numbers signifies a near collapse of the western population of the species, which spends the winter months in California. The monarchs migrate northward in the western United States during the spring, summer and fall months, producing several generations before an autumn generation migrates back to the West Coast for winter.…

Banished by Trump but Brought Back by Biden, Fauci Aims to ‘Let the Science Speak’

On Thursday morning, just hours after Mr. Biden’s inauguration, Dr. Fauci spoke to the executive board of the World Health Organization, telling the body that the United States would not be following through with Mr. Trump’s demand to leave the group in the middle of a pandemic. “The United States stands ready to work in partnership and solidarity to support the international Covid-19 response, mitigate its impact on the world, strengthen our institutions, advance epidemic preparedness for the future and improve the health and well-being of all people throughout the world,” Dr. Fauci said in a video appearance. During the Trump administration, Dr. Fauci’s appearances in the White House briefing…

Biden revokes Trump report promoting ‘patriotic education’

President Joe Biden on Wednesday revoked a recent Trump administration report that aimed to promote “patriotic education” in schools but that historians mocked and rejected as political propaganda. In an executive order signed in his first day in office, Biden disband Donald Trump’s presidential 1776 Commission and withdrew a report it released Monday. Trump established the group in September to rally support from white voters and as a response to The New York Times’ “1619 Project,” which highlights the lasting consequences of slavery in America. In its report, which Trump hoped would be used in classrooms across the nation, the commission glorifies the country’s founders, plays down America’s role in…

Trump administration’s report on U.S. history belongs in the trash

In an 11th-hour White House report, the administration that coined the term “alternative facts” says it’s academics who have hijacked the truth about U.S. history. Historians, in turn, generally agree that the report — released by the Presidential Advisory 1776 Commission — is garbage. The document lacks citations, fails to mention Native Americans entirely, traffics heavily in American “values” at the expense of objective truths and bemoans the “radicalization of American politics” from the 1960s onward. Less clear to historians is how much of an impact the report will have on already divided and fact-challenged culture. David Blight, Sterling Professor of American History at Yale University, said that academic historians,…

Trump 1776 Commission report on education re-used old material

The 1776 Commission report touted by Trump includes seemingly copy-pasted material. The Commission aimed to rebut what its authors claim is liberal bias in history teaching.  The report has been attacked for its ideological bias and lack of academic rigor.  Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories. Sections of a report commissioned by President Donald Trump pushing for “patriotic education” appear to have been lifted directly from an old op-ed by one of its authors. The 45-page report was published by the 1776 Commission, established last year by Trump to promote “patriotic education.” It was billed as a rebuttal of the New York Times’ 1619 Project, which placed the story…
