Working From Home and Homeschooling? If You Get Time to Read This, Here’s What I’ve Learned

Although, I’ve found lockdown has delivered something beautiful: unexpected bonus time with my children who are growing up fast. Through the tiredness and the anxiety, there have been moments where my two young ones and I have danced in the kitchen to blot out the noise of tragic news. We’ve painted the stones outside our little flat to manifest hope in many colors and when the rain washed it away, we repainted each stone brighter still. We tried baking and when that failed, it was funny. Night after night, we read to each other under the covers with torches. My children have taught me mathematics — apparently, I need to…

Dayton region loses jobs for first time since spring.

“These cuts are not sustainable and we’re still looking for federal aid to get us through this once-in-a-century pandemic,” Shannon said. A worker on North Main Street in downtown Dayton on Friday afternoon. CORNELIUS FROLIK / STAFF Employment in the Dayton metro area declined -0.6{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1} in December, which was the second worst job loss in the state behind only Toledo (-0.8{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1}), according to preliminary and seasonally adjusted data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The region hadn’t lost workers since April, which was the…

WFH And Homeschooling At Once? If You Get Time To Read This, Here’s What I’ve Learned

Zoom call number three, day two of lockdown 3.0. My daughter unmuted my laptop faster than the word ‘no’ could be manifested, and declared, “What you are saying is boring” to all of my colleagues (it landed surprisingly better than the PowerPoint I was presenting). After all, it’s impressive that a five-year-old can evoke that level of savagery to a virtual boardroom before 9.30am while wearing pink, unicorn-printed pyjamas. We all learned a lot that morning. Covid-19 has cataclysmically changed the working world. Our home and business lives have collided and the smokescreen that existed between the two is outmoded. Managing these two worlds is a delicate balancing act, but…

Physicists have clocked the shortest time span ever

Physicists have measured the shortest span of time ever. It’s 0.000000000000000000247 second, also known as 247 zeptoseconds. And this period is how it takes a single particle of light to pass through a molecule of hydrogen. Not familiar with zeptoseconds? Take all the seconds that have passed since the beginning of the universe. (The universe is about 13.8 billion years old.) Multiply that number by 2,500. That’s about how many zeptoseconds fit into just one second. Researchers reported their new measuring feat in the October 16 Science. It should allow physicists to now study interactions between light and matter at a whole new level of detail. To begin, the scientists…

U.S. is in a ‘race against time’ with new coronavirus variants, scientists warn

The United States is in a race against time to vaccinate as many people as possible before other potentially more worrisome variants of the coronavirus emerge, according to experts. Vaccination efforts in the U.S. have been hamstrung by delivery issues, insufficient supply and hesitancy to get the shots. But to avert another surge of infections, hospitalizations and deaths, scientists say it may be necessary to rethink how the vaccines are rolled out to ramp up the number of shots administered and to protect against new strains of the virus. “We really are in a race against new variants,” said Wan Yang, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman…

Why Our Brains Spend 50{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1} Of The Time Mind-Wandering

Is letting our minds wander good for us or not? New research uses EEG to trace brain wave patterns … [+] when our minds wander. getty When the Pixies released their hit song “Where Is My Mind” in 1988, they could hardly have known what a hot research topic the wandering mind would become. Nor could they have imagined how controversial mind-wandering could be. Cognitive scientists are currently in a debate about whether mind-wandering is good for us or not. Until recently, the evidence has suggested that mind-wandering is actually bad for us and makes us unhappy. Yet mind-wandering is such a natural part of how our brains work, that…
