    Visa backlogs, COVID could scupper international student recovery

    UNITED STATES United States university officials are buoyed by the more favorable immigration policies of a new presidential administration – but worry nevertheless that a backlog of visa applications and COVID-19 will undermine efforts to rebuild international student enrolments in the upcoming academic year, international educators heard this week at the annual NAFSA conference. And despite the growing worldwide availability of a COVID-19 vaccine, they also worry that recent changes in the US State Department’s advisories for overseas travel will hinder their ability to send American students abroad.     Former exchange student returns to Chelsea 50 years later

    The Chelsea High School Class of 1971 held their 50th high school reunion over the weekend and a familiar face joined them from far away.  Alba Lucia Pelaez came to Chelsea High School from Colombia as a foreign exchange student for 18 months thanks to a scholarship from the Civitan Club.  When she first arrived, she spoke no English and spent time learning the language and culture, and in the fall of 1971, began taking her classes to graduate with a diploma.  “It was a great experience,” Pelaez recalls. “When I went back to Colombia, I was proud to say that I graduated in the U.S. It was a very unique…

    What began as a trip to America for education ended up becoming so much more for Vanessa Nguyen of Vietnam. Nguyen’s journey in Bad Axe began in 2017, when she came here as an exchange student as a sophomore in high school. Nguyen said she didn’t pick Bad Axe, but was randomly assigned to it, much like she was randomly assigned to the Harless family, who took her into their home.     After presenting their case toward changing graduation requirements during last week’s regular school board meeting, foreign exchange student Mia Debaisieux and host parent Tiffany Barnfield returned for a special school board meeting May 24 to hear if Mia had earned the right to walk. The regular school board meeting held May 17 ended with the motion to table the discussion until the following week to allow Princeton ISD Superintendent Donald McIntyre and PISD administration to recommend a stance on the issue.     Education Dept. to Start Reviewing Student Loan Forgiveness Programs

    The Education Dept. announced plans to issue new regulations for student loan forgiveness programs. These programs include forgiveness for borrowers with disabilities and defrauded borrowers. Hearings are scheduled for next month, but it could take some time for changes to be implemented. See more stories on Insider’s business page. The Biden administration is tackling the flaws in the federal student-debt forgiveness programs, but it could take a while to see results. On Monday, the Education Department announced it is beginning the process of issuing new higher education regulations, mainly concerning student debt-forgiveness programs.
