A Student’s View: From One of New York City’s Top High Schools to Homeschooling, in a Single Marking Period

This essay is adapted from posts that originally appeared on the New York School Talk blog. At the end of October, I began to homeschool myself in lieu of completing my tenure as a Stuyvesant High School student. There are many reasons I did this, including greater educational and temporal freedom. But it is important that I share not only why, but also how I homeschool, so others might find it easier should they wish to do the same. One of many reasons I chose to homeschool is that homeschooling allows me to pursue my interests. A plant that is permitted to grow toward sunlight will grow stronger than those which…

Inouye Solar Telescope released the first images it captured of the Sun, not only revealing the Sun in unprecedented detail, but also helping scientists peer into the mechanics behind the star’s unpredictable space weather. The telescope produced the highest-resolution images of the Sun’s surface, revealing the detail of cell-like structures of hot gas that cover the entire surface. Single mom graduating from UW-L this weekend hopes to create a ripple from the support she received | News

“Getting this degree just kind of opened the doors and gave me a lot of different chances that I never really expected or hoped for,” she said. “When I started off this endeavor, it was half to find myself, half to make a difference, but mostly to help take care of my family, you know?,” she said. “And now it’s like, I have this chance to actually do something — and what do I want to do with it?” She didn’t wait for the degree to begin working to better the community, though, and she’s been a freelance reporter for The La Crosse Independent, a progressive online magazine, where she’s…
