LAUSD online school deadline is Friday. How to sign up

The Los Angeles Unified School District is preparing to fully reopen campuses for in-person classes on Aug. 16. For parents who do not want to send their child back to campus, an online option is available through the district’s independent study program. Students will be automatically enrolled for in-person class at their school unless they register for independent study by Friday, Aug. 6. Online schooling in LAUSD this school year will be different from the remote learning that began when campuses shut down in March 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. What’s offered for 2020-21 is an online, independent study program run by the district and called the City of Angels…

Forcing homeschooling parents to sign up to register ‘risks treating them like sex offenders’

Forcing parents who homeschool their children to sign up to a mandatory register risks treating them as if they were sex offenders, leading academics have warned. Last month Education Secretary Gavin Williamson confirmed he is ‘absolutely committed’ to creating a register of home educated children, with its introduction ‘imminent’. It follows an Education Committee Inquiry which examined the need for ‘accountability’ and ‘monitoring’ of families who opt out of the school system. But Dr Harriet Pattison, a home education specialist and Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood at Liverpool Hope University, told FEMAIL a register is likely to stigmatise children and parents and could even end up criminalising those who fail…

Letter: Sign up to host exchange student | Letters

Thank you for the Roanoke Times and Dan Casey informing people about our foreign student exchange program. I’d appreciate it if you would publish this letter of gratitude with additional information about the program. Mr. Casey did a great job describing the benefits to host families in his column (April 22) regarding our Foreign Links Around Globe’s Foreign Student Exchange program. When families open their homes to foreign students it also benefits our community and schools. For example, American students and community members learn a great deal about the world when exposed to students from other countries. Our foreign exchange students are well behaved and work hard in school. They…

Sign up to host students abroad in Corpus Christi

One high school student from the Netherlands now lives with her host family in Corpus Christi. CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Traveling aboard during a pandemic may not sound ideal, but students in the Coastal Bend are making it work through a state exchange student program. Every year, between 600 and 700 international students travel and stay in the Coastal Bend through the Green Heart Exchange program. That number went to zero when embassies across the globe shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fast forward to this school year, most embassies have reopened allowing students to travel but the challenge is getting schools here to allow students to attend. Luckily,…

Reawakened Yellowstone geyser isn’t a sign of imminent explosion

A recent reawakening of the tallest geyser in the world is not a harbinger of an imminent volcanic eruption, a new study reports. And it isn’t likely to portend a dangerous hydrothermal explosion either, which can occur when superheated water turns to steam and bursts violently out of the confining rock, researchers report in the Jan. 12 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The reason for the sudden restart of Steamboat Geyser, found at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, remains a mystery, the scientists say. But the study, which examines a wealth of seismic, environmental and other data from the Yellowstone region, is helping scientists better understand what makes…
