Brian K. Ashton will become the second president of fast-growing BYU-Pathway Worldwide, headquartered in Salt Lake City. He will succeed Elder Clark G. Gilbert, who will be the new commissioner of education for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, according to a news release issued Wednesday. Both appointments begin Aug. 1 and were made by the church’s Board of Education, which includes the First Presidency. Ashton has been working for his longtime friend Elder Gilbert as field operations vice president at BYU–PW, which has more than 51,000 students in over 150 countries. Donald Trump had worst jobs record for a president since before WWII; other benchmarks from the Dow to the Big Mac tell different stories for presidential records

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Donald Trump will go down in history as the first president with a net loss of U.S. jobs over a four-year term in federal tracking of the statistic that goes back to just after the Great Depression. Supporters, however, will be quick to inject any number of measures that would support his presidency as a success – many that may or may not be any more directly tied to a president than the monthly jobs estimate by the federal government. Such is the nature of politics and campaigning. Complicated issues get broken down to the most simple data points, none used more often by politicians than the…

A New Day for Science: President Biden’s Big Plan for Scientific Integrity And What Comes Next

Today, the Biden Administration releases a presidential memo on scientific integrity and evidence-based policymaking, setting the stage for the administration’s efforts to build back from the Trump administration’s unprecedented assault on science and strengthen protections for science and scientists across the government. This is big and it puts science on the agenda like never before. Here’s my take on today’s bold actions and what we should watch in the coming months and years. Trump’s unprecedented sidelining of science Science suffered. Scientists were gagged. Facts were manipulated. This is the story of the Trump Administration. But, in part, we’ve seen this movie before. After the George W. Bush administration’s (then unheard…

Nicholas Kamm/AFP via Getty Images With many U.S. schools still shuttered or operating on a limited basis, and millions of children learning remotely (or trying to), the stakes are high for Miguel Cardona. He is President Biden’s pick to run the U.S. Department of Education, and if confirmed, he’ll be charged with making good on Biden’s promise to re-open most K-12 schools…

New conservatory president sings praises of music education

“I am thrilled to be joining South Shore Conservatory as its next president, and am excited to hit the ground running,” said Cinnante, 31, executive director of the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra in Connecticut since 2017. “I’m excited to come in with fresh eyes and an objective approach. I have a real passion for music education.” The conservatory’s top post has been held by Deborah Allinson on an interim basis since September, when Karen Geer resigned after three months in the job. Leading a major organization during a pandemic will be a challenge, Cinnante acknowledged. “I don’t pretend to have a well-defined vision at this time,” he said. “I’m still learning…

Biden to Revoke Trump’s ‘Patriotic Education’ Order, Shield DACA on First Day as President

President Joe Biden is pledging to “preserve and fortify” executive action that shields certain undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as young children, and initiate a government-wide push to emphasize racial equity on his first day as president. Biden announced these and a flurry of other planned executive actions early Wednesday, shortly before he was slated to be inaugurated as the nation’s 46th president. In addition, Biden said he will rescind an executive order from outgoing President Donald Trump that created a commission to promote “patriotic education” in schools and elsewhere. That commission released a report Monday that lamented what it called the role of identity politics and the…
