    Carpentry teacher Jared Lauterbach stopped short when he spied the student seated at the sidewalk art table, sketching a design for a school logo. “Is that Yahya?” Yahya Long, 15, looked up.     Philly students reflect on 11 months online in a pandemic

    Her teachers make the best of it, she said, but it’s not the same. “We make a podcast and videos,” she said. “I Iike it — it’s fun, but we are supposed to be in the paths and stuff.” Antinucci, an honor student, has been able to keep her grades up, but her motivation is flagging.     Philly Counts pivots to city vaccine distribution, education

    With a self-response rate of 57{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1} in 2020, the census reached fewer people during the pandemic than it did in 2010, when that rate was 62{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1}. When compared to cities with similar demographics, such as Detroit and Baltimore, Philadelphia had the largest improvement in self-response rate from the start of the census on April 1 until Oct. 28. “What we can infer from this information is that the tactics that we use to engage people actually were very effective, and we should be looking to do this kind of engagement again in the future,” Reid said.
