Some parents are seeking out permanent virtual school for the fall

“When the pandemic first hit, online school was a bit messy for everyone,” Lucero, a stay-at-home mother from Colorado Springs, told CNN Business. “But my older daughter did so well with it. She started participating more with teachers and became more comfortable than when she was in a school setting. Her grades were amazing.” Her daughter, 13, is on the autism spectrum and diagnosed with sensory processing disorder, conditions that often make it harder for children to communicate, socialize and adapt to environmental changes, such as distracting noises in the classroom. When the Colorado Springs School District announced plans earlier this year to launch a permanent online school option, called…

Adams 12 to create permanent online school

Adams 12 Five Star Schools is developing a plan for remote learning during the 2021-21 school year and beyond. The learning model that the district boosted during the COVID-19 pandemic will take on a new life in future years as a standalone entity, district staff explained to the board of education at an April 21 meeting. The merit of remote learning extends beyond adaptability to a pandemic and can offer some families much-preferred flexibility. The decision parallels that of 27J Schools, which recently announced it will establish a standalone online school. The idea for a permanent online school is “making lemonade out of lemons,” said Adams 12 Board Director Brian…

Pamplin Media Group – Reynolds mulls a permanent online school

Remote learning would be an option for students who want it after schools reopen The Reynolds School Board gave the district a green light to investigate an online school to meet the needs of students who don’t want to come back to school buildings after schools open. Statewide, an array of online schools have become popular over the last few years, with their enrollment surging as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reynolds administrators said the district lost 346 students this year to online schools. That cost Reynolds roughly $3.2 million, since state funding follows students to the schools they attend. Although the remote learning mandated by the COVID-19 pandemic…
