Austin ISD Lays Off Special Education Staff To Reorganize A ‘Toxic’ Work Environment

Lee esta historia en español. Some employees in Austin ISD’s special education department received letters this week saying their jobs were being eliminated as part of a reorganization. Elizabeth Casas, AISD’s chief academic officer, said Friday she needed to take drastic measures because a “toxic work environment” had caused a backlog of special education evaluations. She said 900 students are still awaiting them. “I heard loud and clearly from our community and our parents,” she said. “They are not happy with the services the SPED department has given over the years.” The district would not give the exact number of employees affected. There have been three executive directors in six…

The Show Must Go Online: Randolph High School Improv Club Adapts to Virtual Environment

RANDOLPH, NJ- As COVID-19 continued to impact nearly every aspect of life at RHS, one tiny corner of the high school was doing its best to remain intact. Improv Club, a subsection of the RHS Drama Club, has carried on with weekly meetings, despite the challenges of practicing live improv in an online setting. Although they are currently unable to hold a live performance, the club has worked to strengthen their improv skills in the hopes of showing off their skills later in the school year. RHS sanctioned an Improv Club over seven years ago. In the past, the club held weekly, in-person lunch meetings where students worked on activities…

For Biden, protecting the environment means filling vacant science jobs

Polluting factories go uninspected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Leadership positions sit vacant at the U.S. Geological Survey’s climate science centers. And U.S. Department of Agriculture research into environmental issues important to farmers is unfinished. The ranks of scientists who carry out environmental research, enforcement and other jobs fell in several agencies — sharply in some cases — under President Trump, federal data shows. Veteran staffers say many workers retired, quit or moved to other agencies amid pressure from an administration they regarded as hostile to science and beholden to industry. That poses a challenge for President Biden, who must rebuild a depleted and demoralized workforce to make good…

Executive Order on Protecting Public Health and the Environment and Restoring Science to Tackle the Climate Crisis

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered as follows: Section 1.  Policy.  Our Nation has an abiding commitment to empower our workers and communities; promote and protect our public health and the environment; and conserve our national treasures and monuments, places that secure our national memory.  Where the Federal Government has failed to meet that commitment in the past, it must advance environmental justice.  In carrying out this charge, the Federal Government must be guided by the best science and be protected by processes that ensure the integrity of Federal decision-making.  It is, therefore, the…

COVID-19, education, digital access, inclusion, environment

Mesa Mayor John Giles urged the city to focus on five areas as he begins his second full term leading Arizona’s third largest city: the COVID-19 pandemic, education, the digital divide, inclusivity and environmental sustainability. Giles gave a “change is good” speech when he first became mayor six years ago. That message is still true, he told the City Council on Monday, as he called on the city to renew its enthusiasm, readdress its goals and make progress.  Responding to COVID-19 will remain the top priority, but the city needs to “chew gum and walk at the same time,” he said. “We can’t do exclusively COVID relief. At some point, we’re going to come out of this and…

Top scientists warn of ‘ghastly future of mass extinction’ and climate disruption | Environment

The planet is facing a “ghastly future of mass extinction, declining health and climate-disruption upheavals” that threaten human survival because of ignorance and inaction, according to an international group of scientists, who warn people still haven’t grasped the urgency of the biodiversity and climate crises. The 17 experts, including Prof Paul Ehrlich from Stanford University, author of The Population Bomb, and scientists from Mexico, Australia and the US, say the planet is in a much worse state than most people – even scientists – understood. “The scale of the threats to the biosphere and all its lifeforms – including humanity – is in fact so great that it is difficult…
