U.S. Department of Education to Investigate UChicago for Alleged Title IX Violation

Editor’s note: This piece is a collaboration between the Hyde Park Herald and The Chicago Maroon. The U.S. Department of Education (E.D.) will investigate the University of Chicago Title IX Office following a retaliation complaint by a recently dismissed Ph.D. student, whose allegations and fundraising efforts have gained a high profile on social media over the past few weeks. Zain Jamshaid, a former Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies, contacted the E.D. after the University dismissed him from his program, citing a lack of academic progress. In March 2020, Jamshaid filed a Title IX complaint against a faculty member in his department; the complaint detailed an alleged…

Biden appointees to Education Department include equity expert, Warren and Sanders aides

The Biden administration on Wednesday announced a slew of appointments to the Education Department, including well-known higher ed advocates, people who have worked on behalf of student loan borrowers, and several former aides to progressive Democratic senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. Among those named was Michelle Asha Cooper, a longtime advocate for education equity. She was formally appointed as deputy assistant secretary for postsecondary education, and will serve as acting assistant secretary, as reported by Inside Higher Ed Wednesday. She was most recently president of the Institute for Higher Education Policy, which advocates for colleges and universities to do more to help students succeed. In her new role at…

Another fail by the NYC Department of Education

Did anyone at the city Department of Education think once, let alone twice, about allowing young students to be taught lessons from a curriculum drawn up by Black Lives Matter radicals? One that idealizes a cold-blooded cop-killer? As The Post’s Selim Algar and Lee Brown report, city public schools are joining in a Black Lives Matter at School “week of action.” The group’s Web site — which notes it is “committed to disrupting the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement,” among other beliefs that we’re pretty sure most African Americans don’t share — centers on an inspirational quote from no less than Joanne Chesimard, a k a Assata Shakur, a Black Liberation…

Rand Paul, in tense exchange, presses Biden’s Education Department nominee on transgender student athletes

President Biden’s nominee for education secretary, Miguel Cardona, faced questions on transgender student athletes during a tense exchange with Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on Wednesday. On the first day of his term, President Biden issued an executive order calling on schools to allow transgender athletes to participate in sports corresponding to their gender identity rather than biological sex. Paul, however, noted that in 2020 the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights told Connecticut that allowing biological males to participate in girls’ sports violated the rights of female students under Title IX. BIDEN EXECUTIVE ORDER SAYS SCHOOLS SHOULD INCLUDE TRANSGENDER ATHLETES…

California Department of Education notes a decrease in enrollment numbers since March

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The State Department of Education says enrollment numbers in California public schools have declined by more than 700{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1} since the start of the pandemic. And while many have an idea on why officials say there isn’t much local data yet to prove the exact reasons. “The only real drop that we have seen is that we have had a downward tik in our kindergarten registration,” said Kelly Richer, superintendent, Wasco Union Elementary School District. Kelly Richer, superintendent, Wasco Union Elementary School District, tells 23ABC that this lack of new students could have financial repercussions, equivalent to one or two teaching positions. “Normally we have a significant number…

Biden’s Department of Education Secretary pick Miguel Cardona says student debt relief will be “a priority”

Miguel Cardona, President Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the Department of Education, said he would support student loan forgiveness if confirmed, but gave little indication of what student debt relief might look like in practice. In a Monday interview with Connecticut Public Radio, Cardona, who serves as Connecticut’s education commissioner, said that despite his background in K-12 schools, tackling student debt would be a “would be a priority for me, it would be an area of focus that early on we’d have to really make sure we’re coming up with clear support plans and strategies.” Last year federal student loan debt reached an all-time high, nearing $1.6 trillion among more…

She Was About To Lose Her Job. Then Her Dad’s Department Hired Her

Two weeks before Honolulu’s former budget director Manny Valbuena left office, his department hired his daughter for a six-month gig that was not advertised and for which no other candidates were considered.  Marielle Valbuena, 26, had been working in the office of former managing director Roy Amemiya, a longtime colleague of her father. As an appointee, she was set to lose that job when former mayor Kirk Caldwell’s term ended, according to Amemiya. “It’s part of my job to make sure that people who are losing their jobs get placed,” said Amemiya, who signed off on Valbuena’s transfer to the Department of Budget and Fiscal Services. “I take that very…
