Biden’s Education Department must choose accountability or a ‘Marbury v. Madison’ moment

The Biden presidency largely has been hailed as a return to normalcy, transparency and accountability following the tumultuous years of the Trump administration. Why then, is Biden’s Department of Education refusing to allow one of its most important oversight boards to meet?   The National Board for Education Sciences (NBES) is an advisory committee tasked with ensuring that the policies and recommendations adopted by the Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES) are objective, secular, neutral, non-ideological and free of partisan political influence and racial, cultural, gender or regional bias. Congress believed the role of this board was important enough to require the NBES to meet at least three times…

The teaching of civics and history — an opportunity to better understand our past and how our government works so we can engage in and influence our future — has long provided the foundation for students to be active participants in society and help our nation live up to its highest ideals. These values have been championed over the years by Americans of all backgrounds, and they are deeply embedded in our commitment to both patriotism and progress. The group, founded by former Department of Education officials, asserts that the agency has failed for years to use all the tools it has to collect money from the colleges and their owners while requiring students to continue paying their debt. “The Department of Education continues to spend time and money opposing struggling student borrowers while doing nothing to collect more than $1 billion owed to the government by…

Congressional Republicans accused the Biden administration Friday of pushing a divisive and revisionist U.S. history curriculum on schools in the wake of its announcement that it plans to prioritize more diverse perspectives and slavery’s lasting impact on inequality in the U.S. In a letter addressed to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and signed by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and 36 of his Republican colleagues, McConnell argued the Biden administration’s efforts are akin to “spoon-feeding students a slanted story.” “Americans do not need or want their tax dollars diverted from promoting the principles that unite our nation toward promoting radical ideologies meant to divide us,” McConnell wrote. “Our nation’s…

Baylor students join LGBTQ class action suit against Department of Education | Education

She posted a picture of herself from the game, captioned “flag runner,” to her Instagram account. Some students responded with disapproving comments, and one copied Veronica’s caption but removed the letter L from the word “flag.” She deleted it and moved on. The next year, the student senate passed the “No Crying on Sundays” bill she wrote, which calls for the Baylor Board of Regents to approve an official student-group charter for Gamma Alpha Upsilon, an unofficial LGBTQ student group. After the bill passed, someone started leaving sticky notes with anti-LGBTQ slurs written on them on the door to her dorm room, Penales said. Her residence hall director was apologetic…
