APPLETON, Wis. Duong has been a part of Fox Valley Lutheran High School’s foreign exchange student program since she started as a freshman in 2017. Before the pandemic, she would go home to Vietnam visit her family every summer. COVID-19 pandemic causing increased homeschool shift

CHICO, Calif. – Some families are choosing to switch to homeschooling instead of in-person learning. Nicole Scoubes made the decision to put her middle school children into homeschooling for the health and safety of the entire family. Chico Unified School District said it has seen a significant increase in students transitioning to homeschool as 81 students switched. “Being homeschooled is on their own terms,” Nicole said. “They have a little bit more freedom.” Nicole said the pandemic hit a hard spot in their life as she is at high risk for cancer, and her daughter, Mia Scoubes, is a Type 1 Diabetic. Although homeschooling is the safer option, it has…

Homeschooling During the Covid-19 Pandemic Changed Me as a Mother

The past year has been intense for well, pretty much everyone around the world, but mothers, in particular, have taken on an outsized burden that has left us overwhelmed, frazzled, and absolutely exhausted. We’ve all been forced to make seemingly impossible decisions about how we would organize our family lives while we’ve spent the greater part of a year stuck and safe at home. Many moms quit their jobs, others started working from home whether full- or part-time so they could assist their kids with virtual learning, and still others like myself, made the choice to independently homeschool our children to avoid the unknowns that the COVID-19 pandemic has unleashed…

UW-Madison chancellor apologizes for keeping COVID-19 discussions private | Higher education

“I would be delighted to share information,” Blank wrote in an email chain to Big Ten chancellors and presidents. “(B)ut perhaps we can do this through the Big 10 portal, which will assure confidentiality?” Bill Lueders, president of the Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council, criticized Blank on Monday for encouraging secret discussions on a topic he said is clearly in the public’s interest. “It’s clearly illegal for her to use this backdoor channel to conduct the public’s business,” he said. “The calculation with which Chancellor Blank has tried to evade the requirements of our open records law is deeply troubling. I think she’s embarrassed the university and state of Wisconsin.”…

Photo courtesy of Stacy Phelps Hannah Steyn, Assistant News Editor While COVID-19 has impacted every aspect of life, one of the major changes has been that of travel. Some young adults will volunteer to get COVID-19 for science

bioethics: A code of conduct for research in biology and medicine. To be ethical, people should treat others fairly, avoid cheating or dishonesty in any form and avoid taking or using more than their fair share of resources (which means, to avoid greed). Bioethics applies this idea to research. It focuses on how to avoid putting others at risk without first alerting people to the potential dangers — and having them choose to accept such risks without coercion. A person who works in this field is known as a bioethicist. biology: The study of living things. The scientists who study them are known as biologists. contagious: An adjective for some…

International Exchange Students Help Restaurants During COVID-19 Crisis | NewsCenter

An idea developed by two international students at SDSU has grown into a company with a mission to prevent food waste. “Our goal is to help as many local communities as possible and expand further to help prevent food waste and hunger.” Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown of many businesses throughout the U.S., the nation’s restaurant industry has been  particularly hard hit.  As a local remedy to this situation, two international exchange students studying at San Diego State University have devised a mobile app that can help restaurants sell unserved food at closing time while offering customers a substantial discount.  Till Hartwig and Till Kuehn,…
