Homeschooling spike expected to continue during COVID-19 pandemic, even as schools reopen

NEW ORLEANS – Even though most school districts have reopened their doors this semester, many students will not be returning to the classroom.  The number of students being homeschooled has nearly doubled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Home Education Research Institutes estimates about 5 million students were homeschooling in March 2021. In 2020, that number sat at 2.6 million.  “Interest has exploded,” said Christopher Chin, the president of Homeschool Louisiana, a faith-based support group for homeschooling families.  Chin said he’d expect this trend to continue even after the pandemic.  “There is going to be some melt where people do go back into an institutional school setting,…

Sparked by COVID-19 pandemic fallout, homeschooling surges across US

Although the pandemic disrupted family life across the U.S. since taking hold in spring 2020, some parents are grateful for one consequence: They’re now opting to homeschool their children, even as schools plan to resume in-person classes. MOM’S VIRAL PHOTO ENCOURAGING KIDS TO GET OUTSIDE SPARKS SCREEN TIME DEBATE The specific reasons vary widely. Some families who spoke with the Associated Press have children with special educational needs; others seek a faith-based curriculum or say their local schools are flawed. The common denominator: They tried homeschooling on what they thought was a temporary basis and found it beneficial to their children. “That’s one of the silver linings of the pandemic…

Homeschooling sees a resurgence as COVID-19 cases rise

LEE COUNTY The changing pandemic is causing a homeschooling surge. Many parents are opting out of sending their kids to in-person classes this school year, as COVID-19 cases rise and schools return to full-capacity learning. Stability and safety are two very important things to parents when it comes to the kids’ experience. That’s why we are seeing an increase in homeschooling nationwide. The classroom is changing. “I was not a fan,” Cesali Garcia said. “Just too much time of them on the computer hours and hours.” Mothers such as Cesali Garcia and Rachel Gagnon switched to homeschooling. “The pandemic forced me to take that leap,” Garcia said. “I was…

Homeschooling applications in California more than double amid COVID-19 school closures | California

(The Center Square) – The number of California parents who elected to homeschool their children amid the COVID-19 pandemic increased significantly last school year. Data released by the California Department of Education on the number of parents who applied to homeschool their children in the last school year shows 34,715 affidavits filed to homeschool at least one child. In the 2018-19 school year, 14,548 applied. An additional 3,215 people submitted private school affidavits, which would allow them to operate schools with six or more students. This could be because of the increase in groups of parents privately schooling their children in groups that became known as “pandemic pods.”  The Coalition…

Rep. Natalie Mihalek: Restoring our education system after covid-19

As a mom and a state representative, education is always on my mind. It pains me to see how children have been suffering throughout the covid-19 pandemic — especially when it comes to lost learning opportunities. While schools in my area have reopened, across Pennsylvania, many children haven’t been in a classroom since last March. Having seen my own elementary-age daughters struggle with online learning, I can only imagine the hardship of those families and students who just aren’t suited for fully remote schooling. The impact is noticeable. Parents outside of Philadelphia requested information from their local districts to see how students are faring. In one district, the number of…

Homeschooling on the rise during COVID-19 pandemic

Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey shows significant increase in homeschooling rates in fall 2020 Homeschooling is a legal instructional option in all 50 states and national homeschooling rates grew rapidly from 1999 to 2012 but had since remained steady at around 3.3{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1}. However, the global COVID-19 pandemic has sparked new interest in homeschooling and the appeal of alternative school arrangements has suddenly exploded. So, how significantly have homeschooling rates increased during the pandemic? It’s clear that in an unprecedented environment, families are seeking solutions that will reliably meet their health and safety needs, their childcare needs and the learning and socio-emotional needs of their children. The U.S. Census Bureau’s…
