A Coronavirus Epidemic Hit 20,000 Years Ago, New Study Finds

Researchers have found evidence that a coronavirus epidemic swept East Asia some 20,000 years ago and was devastating enough to leave an evolutionary imprint on the DNA of people alive today. The new study suggests that an ancient coronavirus plagued the region for many years, researchers say. The finding could have dire implications for the Covid-19 pandemic if it’s not brought under control soon through vaccination. “It should make us worry,” said David Enard, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Arizona who led the study, which was published on Thursday in the journal Current Biology. “What is going on right now might be going on for generations and generations.”…

Worker Shortages, Fear of Coronavirus and Industry Dislocation Stymies Jobs Recovery | National News

At Tavern on 12, a roadside eatery in the southern Outer Banks hamlet of Frisco, North Carolina, things are going swimmingly. After a couple months break for a maintenance project, Tavern on 12 reopened in late February and “we are slammed every day right now,” says owner Steve Jones. There’s only one problem. Jones is not able to open his restaurant every day as he can’t find the workers to run two shifts. Instead, his current staff is running at full tilt and he does not want to burn them out, especially as the area prepares for the upcoming summer season when rental homes and restaurants are usually full to…

Some homeschooling students entering alternative learning program, data suggests | Coronavirus

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — According to Clark County School District, about 4,000 more letters of intent to homeschool have been submitted this school year, compared to the average number in years prior. Now, in FOX5’s continuing coverage, it appears that some of those students are learning in alternative group settings, rather than just at home. Southern Nevada Urban Micro Academy said they have seen their enrollment numbers almost double since last semester. The public-private partnership added two additional grades, seventh and eighth, and have expanded to neighborhood recreation centers to add additional classrooms to accommodate the demand. One parent said she took her daughter out of CCSD and enrolled her…

Why we still don’t know for sure where the coronavirus came from

More than a year after the novel coronavirus had spread to all corners of the globe, officially becoming a pandemic, we still don’t know where it came from (SN: 3/11/20). Many researchers agree the virus most likely came from nature, probably harbored in bats. Even so, conspiracy theories claiming that the virus came from a lab arose shortly after the first genetic blueprint for SARS-CoV-2 was unveiled in January 2020. Using that very genetic blueprint, multiple studies have refuted the lab-borne hypothesis and continue to point to bats as the original source of the virus. But even after more than a year of sleuthing, many questions remain. It’s unclear where…
