The Mental Health Toll of Keeping Schools Closed

Feb. 4, 2021 — As a pediatrician, I have the privilege of hearing from parents and the responsibility to help them. Lately, I have heard heart-wrenching stories of suffering: from the dad whose 14-year-old daughter is sobbing in her bathroom three times a week, depressed from being isolated, to the mom whose son is failing every subject in eighth grade online school, to the family whose daughter overdosed for the second time this pandemic due to thoughts of suicide. Prince George and Princess Charlotte haven’t returned to school following their holiday vacation. Their school, Thomas’s Battersea, remains closed because of increased COVID-19 cases in the area. Today’s the first day of school (and work) for some people following the holidays, but Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children aren’t included in that population…and no, it’s not because they’re getting special royal treatment. Prince George and Princess Charlotte will be hanging out at the palace for a little while longer because their school—Thomas’s Battersea—is staying closed longer than anticipated. Over the weekend, U.K. government officials confirmed that all primary schools in London (where Thomas’s Battersea is located) will remain closed because…

Barnes & Noble Education CFO Eyes More Cuts as Campuses Remain Closed

Thomas Donohue, the chief financial officer of Barnes & Noble Education Inc., has been slashing costs since the early days of the pandemic. He expects to keep doing so as another semester of remote learning approaches, forcing the campus bookstore chain to keep some of its outlets closed. The coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc on college and university bookstores’ finances as many schools pivoted to online learning and students avoided campuses. College sporting events often took place with few or no fans attending, weighing down sales of T-shirts and other merchandise. Basking Ridge, N.J.-based Barnes & Noble Education, which operates over 760 stores on college campuses in the U.S., responded…
