New school session to be online for all classes for now, says govt

A day before the start of the new academic session in schools across the national capital, Delhi government officials on Wednesday said all classes in private and public institutions will continue to remain online, a decision which caused confusion for some schools that had prepared to begin the session with in-person lessons for students of classes 9 to 12. Schools in Delhi have conducted online lessons and exams for all students till Class 8 since March last year, owing to restrictions in place to minimise the spread of Covid-19. Between January 18 and February 5, the Delhi government had allowed schools to reopen for students in classes 9 to 12,…

Michigan students, struggling with online classes, saw more F’s on their report cards this year

Michigan students saw more Fs on their report cards than usual this year as many kids have struggled to keep up with online-only classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the efforts of teachers to keep students on track, K-12 schools have faced immense challenges with conducting distance learning. The abrupt closing of schools last March forced teachers to pivot quickly to remote learning at an unprecedented scale. School leaders say students at all grade levels have struggled with online classes because of the lack of face-to-face interaction with teachers, as well as other issues such as technical glitches and the lack of access to technology. “It takes a lot to…

San Francisco sues its own school district to reopen classes

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The city of San Francisco took a dramatic step Wednesday in its effort to get children back into public school classrooms, suing its own school district to try to force open the doors amid the coronavirus pandemic. The lawsuit was the first of its kind in California and possibly the country, as school systems come under increasing pressure from parents and politicians to end virtual learning. Teachers unions in many large school districts, including San Francisco, say they won’t go back to classrooms until they are vaccinated. City Attorney Dennis Herrera, with support from Mayor London Breed, said he sued the San Francisco Unified School District…

State Board of Education to vote on changes to social studies classes :: WRAL.com

By Emily Walkenhorst, WRAL education reporter Raleigh, N.C. — On Wednesday, the North Carolina Board of Education discussed changing the way students in North Carolina public schools learn about diversity and inclusion in social studies classes. Under a new proposal, public schools in the state would include topics like the oppression and contribution of women, racial groups and religious groups in social studies classes. The board will vote Thursday on changes discussed Wednesday. Debate over the proposed standards has been heated, as divisions over the changes have reflected national divisions on how history should be taught in schools. At issue is whether the proposed standards teach enough of the negative history…

In-person classes start for Erie School District elementary students

About half of the Erie School District’s elementary school students started in-person classes in a hybrid format for the first time this school year on Monday. The district’s middle and high school students could get the same chance sooner rather than later. The 11,000-student Erie School District, the largest in the region, is considering offering hybrid instruction — a combination of in-person learning and online classes — to middle and high school students who have fallen behind in their grades while taking online-only instruction throughout the academic year. Erie schools Superintendent Brian Polito said the district is also exploring whether it can start a hybrid format for all middle and high school students earlier…

CDC reports how classes can be safe, prevent spread

In-person schooling can be safe, U.S. health researchers argue, but it requires schools and their surrounding communities to commit to a slew of public health precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. President Joe Biden and his administration have made a return to in-person instruction a priority, setting out to reopen most schools within his first 100 days. Last week, Biden directed the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services to provide clear guidance and resources to reopen schools and child care centers. On Tuesday, two epidemiologists and a researcher from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published an opinion piece in the Journal of the American Medical Association, writing that “accumulating…
