‘Building Back Better’ requires a new approach to US science and technology

Over 60 years have elapsed since the Sputnik moment, the last major redesign of the U.S. science and technology enterprise. Those organizational and process changes included the establishment of the National Science Foundation, NASA, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and ushered in decades of U.S. leadership in scientific research and development. Today, it’s questionable whether the U.S. still holds global leadership in technology areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, quantum computing and advanced manufacturing. China’s rapid rise and stated intentions are predatory to U.S. science and technology. The global spread of advanced technologies translates to potentially greater threats and risks of misuse by malign actors. North Korea’s…

Amazon plans to add 3,000 more jobs in a new Seaport building

“Boston is one of the seats of learning in the United States,” said Prasad, who is head scientist for Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant. “You have some of the world’s best universities and just this natural flow of talent into Amazon and other tech companies.” Amazon will lease space in a 17-story building planned as part of WS Development’s 23-acre Seaport Square mixed-use project. The tower, at the corner of Congress Street and Boston Wharf Road, will be adjacent to a 430,000-square-foot space it signed a lease for three years ago. The new building needs design approval from the city but otherwise has all permits. WS hopes to start construction by…

Akron’s 22 Exchange building to convert from student housing

Downtown Akron is getting a new round of apartments that are expected to come online next year, thanks to the redevelopment of a major student housing complex. The project is at the corner of South Main and Exchange streets in what’s known as 22 Exchange — a student housing project that went into foreclosure and was subsequently sold last year. The buyer, Alabama’s Capstone Real Estate Investments, is converting the building to market-rate apartments that it plans to begin leasing next year, said Capstone principal and executive vice president Christopher Mouron. “The entire property will be transformed, much of which is centered around enlarging bedrooms, creating kitchens, additional storage space…

Despite development slowdown, the state’s life science industry keeps on building

From the industry’s traditional hub in Cambridge’s Kendall Square to emerging hot spots in Fort Point and the Fenway to vast campuses in more distant locations such as the former Fort Devens, life science companies are launching a wide array of projects, fueled by investors attracted to a fast-growing industry. “There’s just tremendous interest in investing in these sort of projects,” said John Bonnano, chief investment officer at IQHQ, a real estate firm that’s launching two major life science developments here, and earlier this month closed on a $1.7 billion fund to finance more in Boston, San Francisco, and San Diego. “There’s an awful lot of capital out there right…
