Petition aims to dissolve Nebraska board of education

Nebraskans are collecting signatures for a 2022 ballot initiative that would dissolve several key education positions, replacing them with a new office that reports only to the governor. The petition seeks to dismantle the state’s Department of Education, elected School Board, and School Board Commissioner through a constitutional amendment which would create a new Office of Education, overseen by the governor’s office.  That stems mostly from Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts’ multiple clashes with the state’s school board this year over its proposed updates to the state’s health education standards.  The updated standards would have incorporated lessons about gender identity and sexual orientation in school health classes. The board in September…

School board hashes out details for WCS Online, extracurriculars | News

Williamson County Schools may establish WCS Online as an entity separate from any brick-and-mortar school starting this fall, and the WCS Board of Education held a lengthy discussion during its work session Thursday about the implications of this move. The Tennessee General Assembly has passed legislation this year that would allow the state to withhold some or all of its Basic Education Program (BEP) funding from schools that continue virtual learning into the next school year. One way around that is by establishing a fully online school, not merely an online option for students at a typically in-person school. WCS Superintendent Jason Golden shared he believes, for this year, establishing…

School board approves WCS Online schools | News

The Williamson County Schools Board of Education approved the establishment of two fully online schools — WCS Online for K–8 students and for high schoolers — during its meeting Monday night. “The executive director of the state board of education let superintendents know just a couple of weeks ago that they did not intend to approve a structure for a student to be fully online next year without a dedicated school,” WCS Superintendent Jason Golden said. However, some members had questions…
