Biden’s Education Department must choose accountability or a ‘Marbury v. Madison’ moment

The Biden presidency largely has been hailed as a return to normalcy, transparency and accountability following the tumultuous years of the Trump administration. Why then, is Biden’s Department of Education refusing to allow one of its most important oversight boards to meet?   The National Board for Education Sciences (NBES) is an advisory committee tasked with ensuring that the policies and recommendations adopted by the Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES) are objective, secular, neutral, non-ideological and free of partisan political influence and racial, cultural, gender or regional bias. Congress believed the role of this board was important enough to require the NBES to meet at least three times…

‘I have a future’: how Biden’s free community college plan could transform education | US education

Abdi Yusuf’s first day of middle school was tough. He was 13 years old, and he and his family had recently fled to Texas from South Africa as refugees. Yusuf had just finished the equivalent of third grade in Cape Town but found himself in eighth grade in the US, and remembers trying to decipher a math worksheet and to find a friend amid a sea of unfamiliar faces. “That was really hard because in my school in Africa, I always had friends,” said Yusuf, now 19. In high school, his family moved to Seattle and he started to find his footing, even taking a college-level English class in his…

    Michigan needs Biden’s jobs plan

Thanks to the millions of Michiganders who followed health guidelines, the dedicated work from health professionals and state agencies, and new federal leadership, Michigan is on the path to recovery. We are starting to rebuild the economy — but there’s still more work to do. President Biden’s American Rescue Plan directed important federal funding to Michigan, including a wage increase for direct care workers and funding to expand vaccinations for Michiganders. On Wednesday in a speech in Pittsburgh, President Biden laid out his American Jobs Plan, showing how millions can be put to work right now by investing in America’s future. His announcement was the next step on Michigan’s road from rescue to…

Biden’s Education Secretary cancels debt for about 72,000 students

The Dept. of Education just said it’s canceling debt for about 72,000 defrauded student borrowers. This reverses a Trump-era policy that provided only partial debt-relief to the defrauded students. Borrowers are still struggling to pay off debt after for-profit schools were shut down over scams. See more stories on Insider’s business page. Although student debt cancellation for every American has not been implemented, debt accrued by students who were frauded by for-profit schools will see their loans forgiven in the coming weeks. In his first major move as Education Secretary for President Joe Biden, Miguel Cardona on Thursday reversed a Trump-era policy that gave only partial relief to defrauded students.…

Fraction of Biden’s $128B education relief plan would go toward schools in 2021, CBO estimates

President Biden’s COVID-19 relief package would put $128 billion toward helping K-12 public schools deal with the coronavirus pandemic, but the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that just $6 billion would flow to schools in 2021. The CBO estimates that the number would increase to $32 billion in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The rest of the money would be paid out through 2028, according to a cost estimate released Monday. The comparatively small outlay for fiscal year 2021, which runs through Sept. 30, 2021, is expected because previously allocated money has not yet been spent. BIDEN’S NEW TARGET FOR REOPENED SCHOOLS IS BEHIND WHERE US IS NOW, DATA SHOW Congress previously approved $31 billion for education relief in…

Biden’s Keystone XL pipeline order costs hundreds more oil worker jobs

The Schork Group principal Stephen Schork says oil is now being ‘bid out of inventory,’ which is a sign of rising demand and therefore, stronger prices. Workers at pipe manufacturer Berg Pipe are facing job losses following President Biden’s decision to rescind the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline. One hundred six workers are facing layoffs, furloughs or a reduction of hours beginning in April. A number of temporary workers have already been let go. The layoffs were first reported by NBC affiliate WPMI in Mobile, Alabama, and confirmed by FOX Business. Biden’s Goal for School Reopenings Suddenly Became More Attainable | Education News

President Joe Biden pledged to reopen the majority of elementary and middle schools for in-person learning in the first 100 days of his administration. Now, the White House has clarified that it considers a school open if it offers students in-person instruction at least one day a week – a much lower threshold than his initial pitch suggested. “His goal that he set is to have the majority of schools, so more than 50 percent, open by Day 100 of his presidency,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday during the daily press briefing when asked what Biden’s definition of reopening is. “That means some teaching in classrooms, so…
