ATHENS – The Greek Online School started a Greek Language Survey with the help of Hellenic Film Society USA in March of 2021 and revealed the results on July 14. The main idea behind this survey was to reach as many participants as possible and find out the ways in which each individual connects to Greece, the Greek language and culture. The survey included various questions from where you stay when you visit Greece to how often you watch Greek movies and received 484 unique responses. “And if we realized one thing, is that all of these people experience their connection to Greece in unique ways but it is evident…

Creative Thinking in both Science and the Arts Is Not for the Faint of Heart

Over the past few months, I’ve been invited to speak with well-known writers, musicians and film producers regarding my recent book, Extraterrestrial. Prior to these conversations, I was on the receiving (and admiring) end of their artistic work, but now they were curious about my own research as a scientist. These exchanges led me to recognize the similarities between innovation in the arts and the sciences. In general, it appears that the craft of creating our most imaginative frontiers cannot be formulated as a cookbook recipe. In sciences and arts alike, creativity appears magically as an unpredictable fountain of inspiration from the subconscious. Its unexpected content breaks routines within traditional…

This seeming inversion has been present for all but five months over the past five years, which is how far back the data are available. It’s been driven entirely by labor force participation. That is, men with advanced degrees have…

Duke Ellington School of the Arts suffers from fallout of false accusations

Yet Ellington officials say the people who run D.C. public schools have failed to honor promises they made in 2017 to put the school on sound financial footing. The D.C. Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) has also not apologized for the harm it did to the school’s reputation three years ago by falsely accusing the families of 143 students of violating tuition rules. Ellington officials say that may have had something to do with the failure to create a new funding formula for the school. Ellington needs help raising inadequate salary levels and relieving the pressure of its big fundraising needs. “Recently, a prospective supporter said she…

‘A phenomenal experience’: Students reminisce on pre-pandemic study abroad opportunities | Life & Arts

Students were prepared to create life-changing experiences abroad, dreaming of eventually returning home to their loved ones to share stories about people they met and lessons they learned while living in their international utopias. Fewer of those memories abroad were made, the excitement for retrieving a passport dissipated and airports felt a lot colder this year due to COVID-19. While the fate of the summer 2021 programs is under review, students who experienced studying abroad pre-pandemic, and those who helped them along the way, are sharing their experiences in hopes of getting others to pursue opportunities when it is safe again. “Studying abroad is a fully immersive experience that allows our students…
