ADP’s December employment report, which measures the change in employees on private companies’ payrolls, said that 807,000 jobs were added last month, significantly above the 400,000 expected by economists. The November report showed a 505,000 increase, which was revised down from 534,000 in the latest release. “December’s job market strengthened as the fallout from the Delta…

With only 194,000 jobs added, September’s jobs report disappoints

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ September jobs report, released last week, showed a decrease of 0.4 percentage points in the U.S. unemployment rate, from 5.2% in August to 4.8% in September. Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 194,000 in September, compared to a monthly average of 561,000, and the number of unemployed people fell by 710,000. The number of marginally attached workers increased by 167,000 and the number of discouraged workers increased by 58,000. The uptick in marginally attached and discouraged workers suggests that the official unemployment rate understates how many workers are currently having trouble finding jobs. Given this difficulty, it is not surprising that the labor force participation rate…

U.S. economy added 916,000 jobs in March, crushing expectations

The U.S. economy added a whopping 916,000 jobs last month, while the unemployment rate fell to 6{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1} from 6.2{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1}, the government said on Friday. Why it matters: The blowout job gains show how vaccines and the economic reopening are juicing the battered labor market. Economists had been expecting an increase of 675,000. It comes after the economy added 379,000 jobs in February, far outpacing expectations. President Biden signed a $1.9 trillion COVID relief package on March 11, which is expected to add another boost to the recovery. US jobs report: 916,000 jobs added in March as pandemic recovery picks up speed

The huge jump in jobs was up from the 468,000 increase in jobs reported for February, which itself was revised up by nearly 100,000 jobs from its initial reading. The gain was also much better than predicted by economists, who expected a strong but more modest increase of 647,000 jobs. Some of the sectors scoring big improvements were among those hurt the worst by the shutdowns associated with the pandemic, including restaurants and bars, which added 176,000 jobs. State and local education jobs rose by 126,000 as schools started to reopen. Hotels and other accommodations added 40,000 jobs, and the category that includes performing arts, spectator sports and amusement parks…

The U.S. likely added jobs in January, but here’s why an increase could be misleading

The U.S. economy might have added jobs in January after a decline in employment at the end of 2020, but don’t be fooled. The labor market is still struggling to recover from the winter coronavirus onslaught. Here’s what to watch in Friday morning’s employment report for January. Increase in hiring The U.S. likely added 55,000 new jobs in January and the unemployment rate was probably flat at 6.7{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1}, according to the forecast of economists polled by Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal. Any increase would be welcome after the economy shed 140,000 jobs in December. It was the first decline in eight months and stemmed from a record rise…

Economy added 49,000 jobs in January

U.S. hiring grew at a modest pace in January, kicking off a year that’s expected to bring a pickup in the job market as more Americans are vaccinated and businesses reopen. The economy added 49,000 jobs, falling short of the 70,000 forecast, as COVID-19 cases persisted but business restrictions eased. The gains, while small, improved from December, when the economy lost 227,000 jobs.  The unemployment rate fell to 6.3{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1} from 6.7{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1}, mostly because of a big drop in the number of Americans working or looking for jobs, the Labor Department said Friday. The lackluster report comes as President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats look to move quickly on a $1.9 trillion stimulus aimed at…
