Mykola “Nick” Prokhorenko, a foreign exchange student at Genesee Central School, arrived in style to celebrate prom on Saturday following a school and community effort to help the Ukranian student have an experience he won’t likely forget.
Prokhorenko reached out to Dave Kozlowski, a teacher at Geneseo, about what he could do to loan or borrow a suit for the big event.
Kozlowski said he was overwhelmed with messages from staff with multiple and different opportunities to provide Prokhorenko with a suit.
Kristie Haigh reached out to Kozlowski and said that she knew the owners of the Wedding Dress and Tuxedo Shop on East South Street in Geneseo.
Haigh is the kindergarten teacher to one of the owners’ daughters and they were more than willing to help out.
“It was really something very special to see that there was an overwhelming amount of people that reached out,” said Kozlowski.
Prokhorenko said that normally there is an event similar to the prom at his school back home in Ukraine but that it is only attended by graduating seniors and is held after graduation.
“It is very intriguing and interesting. It will be interesting to participate in everything in person. I think it’s going to be super fun,” Prokhorenko said a few days before the April 23 event.
Prokhorenko said that he was both excited to go to prom and also not. Although he was looking forward to the event, it was frustrating to him because it meant the school year was also coming to an end.
“There are much more positive emotions about it,” said Prokhorenko.
