New England cities are some of the best places to look for a job this year, although this part of the country also has some of the worst.
A recent WalletHub study suggests South Burlington, Vermont, is the best place to find a job in 2021. It has some of the most job opportunities and lowest unemployment rate, according to the study.
Portland, Maine, just missed the top 10, at number 11. Nashua, New Hampshire, came in at number 14.
“The jobs market took a huge hit in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. At one point, the unemployment rate reached a staggering 14.7{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1}, but it has been steadily recovering,” WalletHub said. “According to the most recent jobs report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national unemployment rate is 6.7{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1}, which still leaves plenty of Americans looking for jobs.”
The cities were ranked using 32 metrics. Those included aspects such as job opportunity, employment growth, disability-friendliness, housing affordability and more.
“With 2020 behind us, it’s time to think about fresh starts, whether that means small changes or a complete life overhaul,” WalletHub said. “For many people, finding a new or better job will be a top resolution.”
But for some it might be harder than others based on their location.
New Haven, Conn., and Bridgeport, Conn., were named among the worst cities for jobs this year.
Only two Massachusetts cities were on the “Best Cities” list. Boston was ranked 118 on the list. It has one of the highest monthly average starting salaries but also has some of the least affordable housing. Worcester, Mass., was ranked in the bottom half, coming in at 146 out of 182 cities.
