Kent District Library offers online high school program for those without a diploma or GED

Here’s a look at KDL’s Career Online High School and how to apply.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — According to statistics, 35,000 adults in Kent County do not hold a high school diploma or GED.  That impacts employment, earning potential, and ultimately the wellness and development of all household members, including children.  But KDL is doing something about that with their Career Online High School.

The flexible and supportive online education program allows participants to earn an accredited high school diploma. It’s fully accredited by the AdvancED Accreditation Commission which grants accreditation to public and private schools across the country. The program provides students up to 18 months to complete 18 required credits.

Students may transfer up to 14 credits from their former accredited high school.  Courses are taught in an online learning environment that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Each student is assigned a coach who supports and guides them through the program.

It also grants students a career certification where they gain real-world training in the following areas:

  • Certified Protection Officer
  • Child Care and Education
  • Commercial Driving
  • Food and Hospitality
  • General Career Preparation
  • Home Care Professional
  • Homeland Security
  • Hospitality and Leisure
  • Office Management
  • Retail Customer Service

Kent District Library has partnered with COHS, and with the generous funding of donors, has a full scholarship for each student accepted into the program through KDL.

To qualify, participants must be 21 years or older, have successfully completed 8th grade, and wish to earn their high school diploma. Applicants must also have a library card in good standing or be willing to apply for a library card.  KDL has opened eligibility for the program to include those who live outside the Kent District Library service area.
