Here’s what getting a top UK degree in China is like

When California-native Julia Aughenbaugh first began looking for a master’s programme that was in line with her goals, there was one thing she knew for sure — she had to study abroad. She looked high and low for the perfect destination until she stumbled upon the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC). She saw much to like: a Top 100 university (QS World University Rankings 2020), a dedicated Admissions and Career team, high student satisfaction, and more.

By enrolling, she would be gaining exposure to two esteemed cultures and education systems: British and Chinese. It was a win-win situation that was hard to pass up. Aughenbaugh got in touch with Dr. John Lowe, a UNNC associate professor at the School of Education and English, who made an impression that was more than great. With credentials like theirs — Dr. Lowe has teaching experience in Kenya, Solomon Islands and the UK — it’s hard to make a bad one.

A full-ride scholarship sealed the deal for Aughenbaugh. “During my time at UNNC, I think having a balance of academic work, internships, and activities really helped me,” she says.

Here, more than 16,000 students from UNNC have graduated with excellent academic qualifications and transferable skills. They are prepared for 21st century demands, equipped with creative outlooks and fresh perspectives. “Through combining innovative and interactive teaching pedagogies and world-class teaching facilities, UNNC will encourage you to think creatively, develop new ideas, and empower you with the necessary skills to become excellent global citizens,” says Professor May Tan-Mullins, Vice-Provost for Teaching and Learning.

These are the future-proof skills and international gravitas that make UNNC graduates stand out to employers. UNNC graduates have secured jobs with prominent Chinese employers such as the Bank of China. On a global scale, alumni can be found excelling in leading multinational organisations such as Boeing, Amazon, Hilton, IKEA, KPMG, Nestlé, Standard Chartered Bank, DHL, Google, and more.

UNNC’s high-quality British education is facilitated in East Asia and taught entirely in English, as it would be at the University of Nottingham. There are 29 undergraduate courses and 18 postgraduate taught courses to choose from, guided by academics who are, in many cases, world authorities in their fields. They are either seconded from Nottingham or appointed to the University of Nottingham’s standards. Research and learning materials are also imported from the UK and elsewhere.

Another reason employers love UNNC graduates? That special know-how you can only get through a truly immersive experience abroad. UNNC offers study abroad and exchange programmes with over 100 partner universities in approximately 40 countries and regions.

“UNNC is a great university to start the journey of a professional career, not only because of its education but also because of all the advice and support given to students during their job hunting. It is not easy to let go of a student’s good life and start preparing for job interviews, write a good CV, or behave at work. Luckily for us, the university has a great platform called ‘Careers and Employability service’ where you can search for job positions and also learn many intricacies of the professional world,” says Clara Martinez Naranjo, a Spanish student who majored in BA International Communications as an exchange student.

According to the 2020 Nottingham Student Experience Survey, over 90{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1} of UNNC students said they were satisfied with arrivals, support and happiness. Overall student satisfaction was 93.3{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1}. Aughenbaugh confirms this, highlighting that UNNC’s community spirit and resources are unrivalled.

“The number of free activities impressed me. Field trips for international students and free Mandarin classes were a big plus,” she enthuses. On campus, there are nearly a hundred student organisations and societies. Students are never short of opportunities to make new friends, engage with like-minded peers or get involved in activities that are in line with their interests.

For Aughenbaugh, “easy” and “accessible” are just a couple of the words she would use to describe her study abroad adventure. “Life in Ningbo is very convenient. You can easily order everything online,” she says. E-commerce website Taobao was her go-to. One of her favourite memories at UNNC? Quickly preparing a Thanksgiving meal with the help of these online offerings. What’s more, living in Ningbo means access to the best of both worlds, with over 7,000 years of history and a vibrant nightlife scene to discover.

Established in 2004, UNNC’s 144 acre campus is now home to over 8,000 students and where 60 countries and regions around the world are represented. Over 900 members of staff are split across academic and professional services, ensuring personalised support all around.
