Florida Education Association calls for teachers to be priority for vaccine

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Floridians 65 and older and first responders are first in line to get the COVID-19 vaccine, but the state’s teacher labor union is giving Florida’s governor a failing grade for bucking the CDC recommendations about essential workers, such as teachers being next for the vaccine.

On its website, the Florida Education Association has created a Take Action page that is a call for action for teachers to send a message to Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The page reads: “One thing everyone can agree on is that students learn best through in-person instruction. This is why the CDC recommends that educators–teachers and staff alike–should have access to the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, Gov. DeSantis has decided to ignore the CDC’s recommended vaccine priority list, choosing to play politics instead.”

It then instructs anyone on the page to enter their address in a provided space to “tell Gov. DeSantis to follow the CDC recommendations and ensure educators have access to the COVID vaccine.”

On Dec. 23, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an executive order placing a priority on residents 65 and over to receive coronavirus vaccines once medical workers and long-term care residents and staff get the shots.

DeSantis’s decision was not in line with the suggestion from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to place a priority on people 75 and older and essential workers like teachers and first responders as the next to get vaccinated.
