Exchange Student

Bloomington’s first Rotary exchange student shares memories

The three Bloomington Rotary clubs honored Bloomington legend Charlotte Zietlow for living their mantra of “service above self” at the clubs’ 7th annual Toast on Nov. 5. Following is a letter to Charlotte sent by Raleigh Lambert of Brisbane, Australia.

As a 17-year-old in 1976, Lambert was Rotary’s first exchange student to Bloomington. Charlotte and her late husband, Paul, welcomed her into their home.

Clearly, Lambert has never forgotten their kindness.

To dear Charlotte,

I send my love and regrets that I could not be in Bloomington with you tonight and to all the members of Rotary I would like to say a heartfelt thank you for my extraordinary year in the United States, made possible by your generosity and belief in the programme that received me as the first Rotary Youth Exchange Student to Bloomington, 45 years ago.
