    Why Can’t Higher Education Change?

From a former colleague: Why is academia so conservative, risk averse, hidebound and deeply unwilling to make the changes necessary to serve students in the contemporary world, all the while claiming to be searching for new models for addressing the needs of our students in a fast-changing world? If higher education had a New Year’s resolution, it would be this: “This year we are going to really change. We are going to take risks, create a new model and keep up with the world around us.” This reads like an auditor proclaiming they “aren’t going to live by the rules anymore,” a historian vowing to “live in the present” and…

Are we witnessing the dawn of post-theory science? | Artificial intelligence (AI)

Isaac Newton apocryphally discovered his second law – the one about gravity – after an apple fell on his head. Much experimentation and data analysis later, he realised there was a fundamental relationship between force, mass and acceleration. He formulated a theory to describe that relationship – one that could be expressed as an equation, F=ma – and used it to predict the behaviour of objects other than apples. His predictions turned out to be right (if not always precise enough for those who came later). Contrast how science is increasingly done today. Facebook’s machine learning tools predict your preferences better than any psychologist. AlphaFold, a program built by DeepMind,…

    MELHS foreign-exchange students share experience

EDWARDSVILLE – Leticia Bennasar-Lluy, Elisabeth Adhamy, Maleen Wolf and Renesha Udho-Asnani are four foreign-exchange students for the Metro-East Lutheran High School girls’ basketball team. MELHS goes through an IHSA-approved organization that finds schools willing to host foreign-exchange students. MELHS has used the organization for almost 10 years now, but girls’ basketball coach Rob Stock said this is the first time he remembers getting basketball players through the program. The program allows for foreign-exchange students to stay for one school year at a time. “They work hard and it’s been fun having them,” Stock said. “It gives us as coaches and the team, in general, a different view on things. We’ve…
