Billions of California education dollars unaccounted for

It’s been eight years since then-Gov. Jerry Brown restructured California’s school funding formulas to direct billions of dollars to the state’s neediest students. But, in 2019, state Auditor Elaine Howle confirmed what critics had been saying for years: State and local tax money allocated under the formula had apparently been used instead to boost overall spending throughout school districts. It wasn’t exactly clear where the money had gone once it reached the districts. Howle’s findings are reinforced by a new report this month from Policy Analysis for California Education, an independent research center that draws from Stanford, University of Southern California and the University of California campuses at Berkeley, Davis…

BIG RAPIDS – It was a learning season for the Big Rapids Cardinal volleyball team, and also for a foreign exchange student from Belgium, Lucie Meurez, a sophomore. “I do play volleyball in Belgium, but I don’t play a lot like there, she said. “I play one game a week and I have practice twice a week. 10 jobs with the most remote work opportunities and how much they pay

As some companies look to return to the office in 2022, others are expanding their remote work opportunities, responding to increased employee demand for flexibility during the pandemic.  New research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, however, suggests that some industries are embracing remote work faster than others. While more than 60% of software developers and market research analysts are able to work from home, less than 1% of those in construction, health-care support or personal care service roles can do their jobs remotely. The BLS only included permanent remote work opportunities, not temporary arrangements made because of the pandemic, in their report. “If you have to interact with co-workers…
