An Exxon lobbyist thought he was in a job interview. Instead, it was a secretly recorded Zoom call.

Keith McCoy thought he was talking to a job recruiter. Speaking on a Zoom video call in May, the longtime Washington lobbyist talked openly about efforts to blunt the Biden administration’s climate agenda on behalf of the nation’s largest oil and gas company, ExxonMobil. In reality, it was not job interview. It was a sting conducted by Greenpeace UK, an environmental group more than 3,000 miles away. Science, not speculation, is essential to determine how SARS-CoV-2 reached humans

On Feb 19, 2020, we, a group of physicians, veterinarians, epidemiologists, virologists, biologists, ecologists, and public health experts from around the world, joined together to express solidarity with our professional colleagues in China. 1 Calisher C Carroll D Colwell R et al. Statement in support of the scientists, public health professionals, and medical professionals of China combatting COVID-19. Unsubstantiated allegations were being raised about the source of the COVID-19 outbreak and the integrity of our peers who were diligently working to learn more about the newly recognised virus, SARS-CoV-2, while struggling to care for the many patients admitted to hospital with severe illness in Wuhan and elsewhere in China. It…

Critical Race Theory and Homeschooling: CRT Not Necessary to Talk about Racism

Opponents of Critical Race Theory protest outside of the Loudoun County School Board headquarters in Ashburn, Va., June 22, 2021. (Evelyn Hockstein/Reuters) I was homeschooled from kindergarten to 12th grade. Like other students, I learned about slavery, Jim Crow, and the myriad other wicked prejudices against black Americans. I did not, however, receive an education under the ideological framework of critical race theory. CRT’s proponents increasingly insist we must either teach CRT or ignore the history of racism entirely. My homeschool education, as with many Americans’ public-school educations before CRT became fashionable, underscores how this is an obviously false choice. One need not teach CRT in order to teach about…

    Exchange Student Program To Resume

By NICK YAMASHITA The Progress Exchange students quickly become family members. Pictured here are international “sisters” Sophie Kvist of Denmark and Logandale resident McKinley Bledsoe of Kvist’s host family showing their colors. PHOTO COURTESY OF TARA LEAVITT. Exchange Students will be returning to Moapa Valley again in the coming school year, after the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered the program last year. The only thing that will slow it down now may be a shortage of local host families. “It is exciting that we get to have foreign exchange students again,” stated local Education First (EF) High School Exchange program Coordinator Brooke Redd. “However, we need places for them to stay.” The…

Opinion | How Conservatives Can Reshape Education

After spending a few columns exploring current debates about history and race and education, I intended to step back and write about why the conservative effort to use state legislation to block new progressive educational theories is likely to ultimately fail. But sometimes somebody writes a better version of your intended column first, and a few days ago Samuel Goldman, a professor at George Washington University and a writer for TheWeek.com, did exactly that. Invoking the long history of failed conservative attempts to fight liberal cultural shifts with legislative backlash, Goldman noted that in the case of education, “statute books are where conservative curriculum reforms go to die.” The problem…

How many jobs did the US economy create in June?

Job growth in the US came in much higher than expected in June, with the economy adding 850,000 jobs last month, which was significantly higher than the 583,000 jobs added in May and 269,000 in April. Last month’s jobs gain was the biggest since August 2020, when employers added 1.6 million jobs. While the June jobs report serves as an indication that the US economy is continuing to recover from the devastating impact of the covid-19 pandemic, the recovery “remains slow and even”, according to Sameer Samana, a senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute (via Fox Business) Hospitality & Leisure sees largest jobs gain The largest share…

Studies add to concern about climate tipping

IMAGE: Professor Michael Ghil: “These results indicate that climate tipping is an imminent risk in the Earth System. Even the safe operating space of 1.5 or 2.0 degrees above present generally… view more  Credit: Philippe Bruère Two model studies document the probability of climate tipping in Earth subsystems. The findings support the urgency of restricting CO2 emissions as abrupt climate changes might be less predictable and more widespread in the climate system than anticipated. The work is part of the European TiPES project, coordinated by the University of Copenhagen, Denmark but was conducted by Professor Michael Ghil, Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris, France and coauthours from The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium…
