New Science Fiction and Fantasy Novels to Read This Summer

The shape and intention of the stories, pairs that make up two wholes that are then explicated by notes, echo the conceits of cell division, DNA and quantum physics. This is a book as much about the process of translation as it is about science fiction, Buddhism and how to live among people. The lovers’ stories are as powerful and clear as the middle stories are difficult and woolly, but the middle stories offer a sort of key to the outer ones: While the beings called Prophets who live in the Dark Realm are obsessed with measuring the virtues of merging and dividing, the star-crossed lovers of our near future…

Foreign exchange students from Europe thrive, shine during time in Texas | Local & State

Fast pace. Foreign intrigue. Iconic destinations. Exotic foods. If that sounds like the recipe for an action-adventure story, in a way it is. But those are just some of the elements that made up the last nine months for two foreign exchange students who spent their junior year attending classes at Lufkin High School. × This page requires Javascript. Rep. Natalie Mihalek: Restoring our education system after covid-19

As a mom and a state representative, education is always on my mind. It pains me to see how children have been suffering throughout the covid-19 pandemic — especially when it comes to lost learning opportunities. While schools in my area have reopened, across Pennsylvania, many children haven’t been in a classroom since last March. Having seen my own elementary-age daughters struggle with online learning, I can only imagine the hardship of those families and students who just aren’t suited for fully remote schooling. The impact is noticeable. Parents outside of Philadelphia requested information from their local districts to see how students are faring. In one district, the number of…

    Addressing Racism Inside Climate Science

Vernon Morris had often felt invisible in a profession defined by observation. As a climate scientist, he’s encountered racist behavior at every level of his field. Feelings of isolation marked his early days analyzing atmospheric ozone chemistry, with virtually no Black peers. Morris has weathered groundless police harassment, and repeatedly been mistaken for a janitor when working at NASA decades ago as a grad student. He was once stopped at a science conference, despite wearing a speaker name badge, as he made his way to the podium to give a speech. And Morris has felt the sting of everyday slights, such as when White scientists and students go out of their way to avoid eye contact.…

Families find ‘depth, beauty’ as they incorporate faith into homeschooling

Faith has always been a foundational part of the Johnson family’s day. Before the pandemic, they got ready for work and school while listening to spiritual music that was upbeat and provided a strong message to get them in the right headspace for the day. After COVID-19 swept across Louisiana, Furnell and Monica Johnson decided to keep their youngest children home rather than send them to a busy school building. With Monica working from home, too, she could serve as “learning coach” for her two elementary-age daughters as they took classes through Lafayette Online Academy. “It’s work,” Monica admits. “I appreciate it, because we’re able to get school done. But…

Why Students Are Logging In to Class From 7,000 Miles Away

Faiqa Naqvi, a 15-year-old freshman at a New Jersey public high school, logs in to her all-remote classes each night from Pakistan in a time zone nine hours ahead. Max Rodriguez, who also attends school in New Jersey, joined his Advanced Placement history class for about two months from Guayaquil, Ecuador, a port city on the coast of South America. Max’s schoolmate, Naobe Maradiaga, 16, participated in classes from northern Honduras. In the midst of the pandemic, in a year when almost nothing about school has been normal, administrators and teachers are grappling with a fresh layer of complexity: students accessing virtual classes from outside the United States. Faced with…

Job quality in U.S. vastly different across racial, ethnic groups

Inequality in the U.S. is worsening by many measures — especially when it comes to employment. Driving the news: The Job Quality Index (JQI), a measurement of “high” to “low quality” jobs in the U.S. private sector, has fallen from 81.1 in 2007 to 80.5 last year. The 80.5 level signifies that 55{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1} of workers were in low quality jobs versus 45{c25493dcd731343503a084f08c3848bd69f9f2f05db01633325a3fd40d9cc7a1} in high quality. (High quality means weekly wages above the national average for non-management production jobs and low means it’s below.) Axios is first to report the new findings from a group of research and industry analysts who publish the JQI monthly. They include economists from the Coalition…
